  • Risers and treads

A riser, the height of each step, is 8¼ inches or less, and a tread, the part you stand on, is at least 9 inches deep.

  • Even steps

The tallest riser stays within ⅜ inch of the shortest.

  • Slope

Treads and landings slope no more than 2 percent.

  • Nosing

The front lip is ¾ to 1¼ inches on solid risers, unless treads are 11 inches or deeper.

  • Handrail

One handrail on at least one side at four or more risers, 34 to 38 inches high.

  • Guards

Guards at least 36 inches tall where a stoop or open side sits more than 30 inches above grade.

  • Landing

A landing at the door where required; doors other than the main exit may have one up to 8¼ inches below the threshold.
