Paver Patios and Driveways in Greenville NC for Sinking Pavers, Ruts, and Weedy Joints

Patios, driveways, walkways, and pool decks on a base built for the job, plus releveling for pavers that have sunk. Zavala Masonry & Concrete LLC builds a paver patio (Greenville NC) for your backyard, plus paver driveways, walkways, pool decks, permeable pavers, and paver repair and releveling. We excavate, build and compact the base, set the pavers, restrain the edges, and fill the joints. Base depth is set by how the surface will be used and by the soil on your lot, across Greenville NC and Pitt County.

Paver Patios, Driveways, Walkways, Pool Decks, and Releveling We Install

Brick paver patio built next to a front porch

Paver Patios

A paver patio for grilling and seating is sized to the space and sloped away from the house, with the pattern laid out before the base goes in.

Paver Driveways

A paver driveway gets a deeper base and pavers sized for vehicle loads. We lay herringbone patterns that hold under turning tires.

Paver Walkways and Entries

Every paver walkway and front entry we build is set level for safe footing. We match the color and pattern to your patio or driveway so the whole front ties together.

Pool Deck Pavers

We install pool deck pavers in lighter colors with textured faces that stay cooler and grip better. Every pool deck slopes to drain away from the water.

Permeable Pavers

Open jointed pavers over a stone base that stores and drains rainwater. We install them where the soil allows and tell you plainly when standard pavers fit better.

Paver Repair and Releveling

Sunken, shifted, or spreading pavers get lifted, the base rebuilt, and the pavers relaid and recompacted. We reuse sound pavers, including ones another company installed.

Paver Types, Laying Patterns, and Joint Sand Options We Bring to Your Site

The interlocking pavers we install meet ASTM C936, with a minimum average strength of 8,000 psi and average absorption no higher than 5 percent. We also install clay brick pavers for homes that call for a traditional look.

We recommend herringbone for driveways because it locks tightest under turning tires, and running bond or basketweave for patios and walks. For joints, we use regular joint sand, which is easy to top up, or polymeric sand, which hardens to resist washout, weeds, and ants and goes in during dry weather. We bring samples to your site so you can see them next to the house.

The Base Depth, Bedding Sand, and
Edge Restraint We Write Into Every Paver Estimate

The base is the part you never see, so we write it into your estimate.

What we build for each project

What we build for each project: paver thickness, compacted base, and wet or soft clay conditions for patios, walkways, pool decks, and residential driveways
ProjectPaver thicknessOur compacted baseOn wet or soft clay
Patio, walkway, or pool deck2⅜ inchAt least 4 inchesDeeper base plus geotextile fabric over fine or wet soil
Residential driveway2⅜ inch, or 3¼ inch for heavier loadsAt least 6 inchesDeeper base and concrete edge restraint as needed
  • We bed pavers on about 1 inch of washed concrete sand (ASTM C33), never stone dust or masonry sand.
  • We grade the base flat within about ⅜ inch over 10 feet and never use extra sand to hide a low spot.
  • We use plastic spike down edging on patios and most drives, and concrete edge restraint where loads are heavier.

Our base depths follow CMHA guidance for interlocking concrete pavements.

Permeable Pavers on Pitt County Lots: When We Recommend Them and When Standard Pavers Fit Better

The permeable pavers we install use wider joints filled with small open graded stone over a deeper stone base that holds rainwater and lets it soak in. Standard pavers shed water across the surface instead.

We check your soil first. We recommend permeable pavers on sandy, well drained lots. On poorly drained clay or a high water table, we add an underdrain or recommend standard pavers. Check with the City of Greenville NC before counting permeable pavers toward impervious surface limits. Our design follows NCDEQ permeable pavement criteria.

Paver Repair and Releveling for Sunken, Spreading, or Weedy Pavers

We relevel and repair pavers, including ones another company installed, and we reuse every sound paver.

Common paver problems and what we do to fix each one
ProblemWhat we do
Sinking or ruts under tiresLift the area, rebuild the base to the right depth, relay and recompact
Edges spreading or gaps openingReset the edge pavers and install proper edge restraint
Puddles or low spotsLift, regrade the base to slope, and relay
Weeds and ant hills in jointsClean out joints and refill, with polymeric sand where it suits
Pavers lifting near treesAddress the roots under the base, then relay

Most paver repair starts with the base, not the pavers. Paver releveling on a rebuilt base keeps the fix flat.

How We Plan Paver Base and Slope
for Pitt County Soil and Heavy Rain

Pitt County NC soils range from sandy to poorly drained clay, with a seasonal high water table in low spots. We slope every patio and drive away from the house to handle about 49 inches of rain a year and summer thunderstorms. Around pools, we recommend lighter, textured pavers for summer heat. As a hardscape contractor in Greenville NC, we meet every homeowner in person.

Why Homeowners Hire Our Crew for Pavers

  • Zavala Masonry & Concrete LLC writes base depth and edge restraint into every paver estimate.
  • One crew installs pavers and concrete, so we recommend whichever fits, not whichever we sell.
  • Sunken pavers are releveled and reused when they are sound.
  • We check the soil before we recommend permeable pavers.

Paver Timeline, Drive On Time,
Releveling, and Pool Deck Heat Questions

Most take a few days to about a week, depending on size, base depth, and weather. We give you a schedule with the estimate.

You can drive on it once the joints are filled and the surface is compacted. With polymeric sand, we follow the cure time on the product label and confirm it at the walkthrough.

Yes. We lift the area, rebuild the base, and relay the sound pavers, replacing just the broken ones.

Darker pavers hold more heat. We recommend lighter colors and textured finishes that stay cooler and grip better when wet.
